Corrosion Under Insulation: GRTgaz Project Call
ROBOPLANET has been selected to take on a strategic challenge in the field of corrosion detection under insulation — a critical issue for the gas transportation industry. CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation) leads to high costs associated with de-insulation, limitations in visual inspections and access difficulties, particularly on long sections of pipelines used in compression stations.
The CUI challenge
Corrosion Under Insulation is one of the most difficult defects to detect in the gas industry. Traditional methods require full de-insulation — a costly and time-consuming operation that limits the frequency and coverage of inspections.
This project aims to evaluate and qualify innovative techniques capable of improving inspections while reducing operational constraints.
A methodical approach to a major industrial challenge
The project was carried out in two distinct phases, designed to build confidence in the selected technologies before deployment on operational assets:
Workshop qualification
Qualifying representative samples in the workshop, replicating corrosion conditions encountered in the field.
Real-world testing
Testing campaign in real conditions on compression station pipelines — a critical infrastructure for natural gas transportation.
These methodical steps allowed for the measurement of the performance of the tested technologies in a complex operational environment.
A state-of-the-art approach for innovative solutions
The final deliverable of the project, completed in December 2019, is a detailed state-of-the-art report on corrosion detection under insulation techniques.
